Several years ago I designed this summer home. The client had grown up visiting a small cabin on the property that belonged to her parents. The cabin was too small and not a good structural candidate for a remodel, so it was decided to remove it and design a new home. The new structure was designed for herself, husband and daughters. We were limited because of the difficult structure of the land to the size and location of the cabin and the codes for set back and height restrictions. We did come up with a plan that met all the criteria and the building went forward and the interior furnishings were completed.
The Entrance to the cabin is midway down to the lake. This is the view from the top of the property, the sauna and boathouse are down on the water.
We left an unfinished area on the lower walk out level for mechanical and storage of outdoor gear and extra things not being used. Several years have passed now and the family needs are changing. Both daughters are married and have started families of their own, there are now two grand children and more on the way. The two guest bedrooms, one for each daughter are on the lower level along with a bathroom between the bedrooms. There is now a need for extra room for the grand children.
This is a photo of the unfinished space that will become our bunk room.
We have the extra unfinished space. We have been working on the plan to turn the space into another bathroom and a bunk room that will sleep five. On this level is a concrete sub floor with in floor heat, since we did not plan for another bathroom on this end of the house in the initial planning it will be necessary to cut into the concrete to add the plumbing runs. We are restricted to where the bathroom can go based on where the utilities are located. We have based our design on these limitations. Again we feel we have addressed all the needs as best as we can given the square footage we have and where things must be placed.
Construction is set to begin this month. I have added some photos of the land and view and the cabin. I have included one photo of the unfinished area that we will be working on. I will update as the project goes along so you can see the transformation. Our design ideas will be a continuation of our original decor for the lower level. We will be using lighting fixtures from the same company and as many things as we can that are still available so it will look like it was all part of the original plan.
This is the main entry hall and the stairway leading to the lower walk out level. I have included this so you can see the style of interior design that we will be continuing with.
