Off Grid Solar House
Tucked away at the end of a beautiful winding, climbing trail on a ledge rock precipitous overlooking a small lake and the Laurentian divide sits a wonderful architecturally designed and totally self sufficient retirement home.
The clients were a referral from and were friends of the head of Dayton’s Interior Design Studio, who I had worked under in the past. When I began the project the house was finished on the exterior and finished just to the point of dry wall on the interior. The clients were interested in an extremely detailed interior design plan based on the Arts & Crafts movement. They had collected many books, photos and ideas employing the use of trim details constructed with multiple wood species and detailing. We started with the development of a plan for the main floor, and chose wood species for flooring, beams and wall treatments. That accomplished we continued to assemble pieces of the puzzle designing the trim details and selecting contrasting species of wood to compliment and highlight. There was no detail that we did not give our full attention, from the granite center island to the tile on the sauna floor. Selecting lighting and appliances we had to consider their electrical draw on the solar power plant. Research was done on the types of washers, dryers, refrigerators and lighting fixtures that are a lower draw. The house is a beautiful statement to a wonderful architectural design and a great designer client relationship.
